Survivex and AIS Training hosted its annual careers event from 1-4 February featuring a series of webinars with some of the energy sector’s biggest players.
The virtual event turned out to be our biggest careers event yet, with over 1200 registered attendees.
TRAC, Halliburton, Windhoist and Wood discussed their upcoming job opportunities in 2021, while recruitment companies Samuel Knight International and Atlas Professionals highlighted roles they recruit for on a regular basis and gave their top tips for landing your dream role. Here’s what they said:
TRAC offers a range of rope access services including structural work and rigging. The business is family-owned with a strong emphasis on helping employees develop and progress with their careers. 82% of the staff are long term personnel, not short contracts.
Shutdown season is coming up soon involving a lot of TRAC’s clients in the North Sea and resulting in many job opportunities.
TRAC will be hiring and is always looking for many different roles including:
- Specialist non-destructive testing (NDT)
- Engineering assistants
- Multidiscipline IRATA level 3 technicians
- Advanced NDT technicians
- Lifting gear inspectors
- Fabric maintenance insulators

Getting the most out of ageing assets will be a key focus, as well as decommissioning, plugging and abandonment. Activity will rapidly pick up in the second half of the year with shutdowns, maintenance and development drilling projects being planned, requiring a wide range of skills.
Having basic certifications such as OPITO Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) or OPITO Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET), an OGUK Medical and OPITO Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) stands you in good stead at Halliburton with specialist skills even better. Good courses to bolt on include well control, banksman slinger, crane operations and mechanical joint integrity.
Going forward, Halliburton is significantly advancing geothermal projects, along with carbon capture and storage.
With 17 projects currently confirmed for 2021 and more potentially coming, Windhoist is actively recruiting for experienced technicians – particularly wind turbine technicians, installation technicians and mechanical and electrical technicians. Due to technical electrics expansion, anyone with an electrical background has an advantage. When applying mention all previous training – even expired certificates.
Best certifications to have include GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) and an RUK Wind Turbine Medical or an OGUK Medical and Chester Step. GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT) would also be a significant advantage, however Windhoist also invests in employees with GWO BTT and other specialist training.
As well as experienced technicians, the company recruits new industry entrants and the best time to apply in March / April onwards. Windhoist also regularly recruits site agents. This is a good role for anyone with energy-related degrees as it involves hands-on site experience and back office work.
Wood outlined its requirements for its operations service line, which is predominantly oil and gas.
The Aberdeen office focusses on upstream and operated assets and is looking for:
- Stage 3 riggers (who have completed an OPITO Rigger Competence Assessment)
- Deck crew (with an OPITO Banksman & Slinger certification)
- Electrical technicians (with a CompEx EX01 – EX04 certification)
- Mechanical and instrument technicians (with an ECITB MJI10 certification)
The minimum standards Wood looks for in employees are OPITO Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) or OPITO Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET), an OGUK Medical and OPITO Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST), followed by some kind of trade qualification, or the above specialist skills.
