The Power of a Digital Twin

2021 has proved a busy time for our development team in developing virtual reality programmes and in particular digital twins. Carry on reading to learn about the true power of our digital twin technology.

Over the past couple of years there has been a growing rise in the demand for digital technology and immersive learning within workforce development. Technology-enabled learning is slowly replacing conventional classroom training, with business opting for a more cost-effective and engaging approach to training.

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of enquiries and interest in digital enhancements, such as augmented and virtual reality but significantly, digital twins.

So, what is a digital twin?

A digital twin, in essence, is a digital representation of a physical object, room, or work site. As well as a physical entity, digital twin technology can replicate your work-site procedures by using advanced analytical, monitoring, and predictive capabilities, test processes and services.

By creating a digital twin of your site or assets within our VR platform, your workers can train and test their skills in the most realistic scenarios possible. We can tailor scenarios and tests within the VR world to meet your exact needs and learning requirements; so, whatever the problem or challenge, we can build you a solution.

How do we do it? We develop immersive 3D virtual replicas, using real-world data, such as storyboards and 360-degree video footage to apply the narratives to a virtual reality platform. Our team immerse themselves in the research of whatever digital twin they are recreating, so we can produce the most life-like experience for our customers. Using volumetric rendering to draw frames and digital recordings of real actors to ensure the characters and objects behave like their real-life twin, we can create realistic environments that people can interact with.

What are digital twins used for?

Digital twins can be used in a wide variety of industries for a wide variety of reasons. Here’s just a few examples:

> Energy sector: These challenges include optimising the operation and maintenance of systems and processes. It is a great tool to use for on-site training.

> Automotive industry: Showrooms have revolutionised the shopping experience for new car customers, by using digital twins to replicate cars exterior and interiors. Customers can browse the internal and external features, familiarise themselves with controls and even experience the noise of an engine, without ever stepping foot inside an actual car.

> Healthcare profession: The healthcare sector has benefitted from digital twins in areas such as surgery training and the hazard prevention of procedures. Using this technique trainee doctors and healthcare professionals can benefit from practical training within a virtual environment, without the demand for patients or access to hospital rooms or equipment.

> Property development: A digital replica of a building or a room can aid building or design projects, providing a life like model that can be experienced through a virtual world. The entire construction process can be planned, visualised and optimised before ground is even broken.

> Crisis or disaster management: Virtual models of cities and smarter infrastructures have been created to improve emergency response times or climate change monitoring.

Who have we worked with?

We have worked with a variety of clients on numerous digital twin projects, such as BP, SANAD (Saudi Aramco Nabors Drilling), Shell, McDonald’s and Equinox Gyms to name a few, and the results have been phenomenal. One of our most innovative and unique virtual reality led projects was an 18-month programme with DNV GL. We developed a digital twin where workers could play out major accident scenarios. – By actively involving the user in making these mistakes you ensure better memory retention. Essentially you learn more from your own mistakes so a delegate seeing the consequences of their actions will remember the experience.

It’s easy to shout about the amazing work we do but what are the real benefits to your training and most importantly, how’s it going to benefit your business? Here’s just a couple of reasons why I think you should be considering digital twins in your workforce training.

> Saves you time: A digital twin can be used to save time and money whenever a product or process needs to be tested, whether in design, implementation, monitoring or improvement.

> Reduces costs: Virtual learning dramatically reduces the need for instructor-led courses. Your workforce can also train in-situ, thereby reducing the amount of time they need to spend off-site.

> Increases employee effectiveness: Being able to test and re-test the skills of your workers and procedures in a safe environment increases knowledge retention and makes your workforce more prepared and work ready. The results of this make the real-world processes more efficient and effective.

With access to our workforce development software, you can have full visibility of real-time insights of the learning performance of your staff when using our digital twins.
